A bit about me

Since my early 20s I have been passionate about promoting health and wellbeing, the prevention of ill-health and disease and connecting with people, listening to their problems, providing care and empathy, helping them to find solutions and supporting them on their journey in life.  I trained as a nurse, midwife and health visitor and when my children were small I began studying public health at university juggling study, work and family life like so many women over 40.

In my 20s I was fairly slim but I was never happy with how I looked and so I struggled with counting calories and hunger pangs and by the time I was in my 40s I was an experienced yo-yo dieter. I tried everything, had short-term success with a very-low-calorie diet but wrecking my metabolism in the process.

In my early 50s I went through a period during which my stress hormones sky-rocketed, I was menopausal, gaining weight and someone close to me was suffering a myriad of symptoms which didn’t respond to conventional medicine.  All of this rekindled my passion for nutrition and lifestyle solutions, and seeking answers which conventional medicine couldn't provide.

So, I know how it feels, to be tired all the time, suffering mood swings, hot flashes, brain fog and aches and pains.  At the same time, you’re caring for adolescent children and elderly parents and juggling responsibilities at work.    I also know how it feels to look in the mirror and hate what you see, to avoid family photos and in spite of all your efforts, you're unable to lose those unwanted pounds.  I felt fat, frumpy and invisible and I wanted to change.

So I trawled the internet on my personal quest to find the latest science and the answers to all of my problems. I  was astonished by what I learnt, much of which turned upside down what I had previously believed to be true.  I found new, evidenced-based nutritional science and was appalled by the misinformation still being promoted to the unsuspecting public.

After taking early retirement the pandemic hit us and during this time I decided to retrain as a nutritionist.  I began studying a short course with the internationally renown Nutrition Network, headed by Professor Tim Noakes. This was followed by graduating with a Diploma in Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching from the Institute of Health Sciences, enabling me to register as a nutritionist in the UK.  

By this time I began learning about functional medicine and it's approach to address root causes of ill-health and chronic disease through holistic, personalised nutrition and lifestyle practices.  This led me to study functional nutrition and how it influences body systems with Andrea Nakayama, founder and director of the Functional Nutrition Alliance.

 Since then, my mission has been to inspire and empower others...

through teaching, advising, and providing guidance and support on their journey towards vibrant health.  I want to share what I have learned about the power of personalised nutrition and lifestyle to achieve the best health and live longer, healthier and happier lives.

I have a particular interest in digestive health, improving the health of our gut microbiota, blood sugar balance and balancing hormones and more recently the role of nutrition and lifestyle and the incredible ability to influence our genetic code and optimize longevity.

 

I am a member of the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners and an ambassador for the UK Public Health Collaboration.
